Choose your windmill height primarily according to wind exposure—not pond size. All tower heights use the same compressor configuration, so a taller tower does not automatically produce more aeration. Pond size determines whether you need the single- or double-bellow compressor.

A shorter tower can perform very well in a large, open area with unobstructed wind. If trees, buildings, hills, or other obstacles surround the installation site, choose a taller tower to position the fan in cleaner, less turbulent airflow. Whenever possible, install the windmill in an open location away from major wind obstructions.

Yes. In most cases, the height of a Joe Mescan windmill tower can be increased later by adding compatible tower-extension sections. This allows you to move the fan above growing trees, new buildings, or other obstructions that may reduce wind exposure.

Increasing the tower height requires partial disassembly and safe lifting of the windmill. Use only compatible tower sections, braces, fasteners, and anchoring components. Choose the single-bellow compressor for ponds up to approximately 2 acres. It is typically the right choice for smaller ponds, simpler pond shapes, and installations using one or two properly positioned diffusers.

Choose the double-bellow compressor for larger ponds up to approximately 4 acres or when greater airflow is needed for multiple aeration zones. Pond depth, shape, water conditions, diffuser placement, and available wind can also affect the proper selection. The GEN-2 modular housing allows you to upgrade from a single-bellow to a double-bellow configuration later if your aeration needs change.

One properly positioned diffuser is usually sufficient for a small round or oval pond with a relatively simple shape. Position it near the center of the pond’s main body of water, at approximately half the pond’s maximum depth rather than automatically placing it in the deepest location.

Two diffusers are often better for long, rectangular, kidney-shaped, or irregular ponds because they distribute aeration more evenly. For a long pond, position the diffusers approximately one-third of the way in from each end. With a windmill system, remember that the combined operating depth of all connected diffusers affects performance, so diffuser quantity, depth, airline length, and available wind should all be considered together.

A bellow compressor is designed to move a high volume of air with each stroke, making it well suited for pond aeration. Compared with many traditional diaphragm-style windmill compressors, a properly designed bellow system can provide stronger airflow while operating in relatively light wind.

Bellows are also straightforward to inspect and replace as normal wear components. A 360-degree air stone diffuser is a porous stone designed to release bubbles around its entire surface rather than from only one direction. As compressed air passes through the stone, it creates bubbles that rise through the water, promote circulation, and help transfer oxygen into the pond.

Joe Mescan’s durable stone diffuser does not rely on a flexible rubber or plastic membrane. Our diffuser packages include brass check valves and hose couplers and can be used with properly configured wind-powered, solar, or electric pond-aeration systems.

For effective circulation, position the diffuser near the center of the area being aerated and at approximately half the pond’s maximum depth rather than automatically placing it at the deepest point.

Our windmills use a self-governing design rather than a conventional brake that suddenly locks the fan. As wind speed increases, the governing system automatically reduces the fan’s exposure to the wind, helping limit its rotational speed and reduce stress on the windmill and tower.

When wind conditions return to normal, the windmill automatically moves back into its regular operating position and continues aerating the pond.
