Common Questions

What height windmill do I need?

The compressor is the same on all windmill heights, the only difference is the tower height. The height you need is determined by where you place the windmill. If you’re able to place the windmill in a wide-open windy area ( Ideally 200ft from buildings, trees & other wind obstructions ), the smaller heights will work just as well as the taller models. If you do have wind obstructions around, then you may want to consider a taller height to avoid these obstructions or place the windmill in a different location. Please note, with the purchases of additional airline hose, you can place an American Eagle Windmill up to 1,000ft away from your pond without losing any CFM or pressure.

Do I need a single or a double bellow compressor?

A Single bellow compressor, designed to cater to ponds up to 2 acres in size.

For larger ponds up to 4 acres, we offer the double bellow compressor. With its increased capacity, this compressor guarantees even greater oxygenation,

Recognizing the significance of oxygen in water, adding a double bellow windmill to a smaller pond will result in a heightened pace of enhancement.

Can I upgrade my windmill to a taller height in the future?

Yes, you can. All you need to do is purchase our tower leg extension from our windmill parts page & add the extension to the base of your current American Eagle Windmills tower. You can find the tower extension and pricing here: Windmill Parts: Tower Leg Extensions – American Eagle Windmills (pondaeration.com)

Does the windmill have a break, or a way to shut it down in high winds?

What is the MAX wind speed your windmills can handle?

The American Eagle Windmill is a durable and reliable solution for harnessing wind energy. Its ability to withstand high wind speeds is enhanced by securely mounting it to the ground, preferably with a concrete foundation. We have tested this windmill in wind gusts exceeding 80mph without any issues. However, as a precautionary measure, we advise all customers to include their windmill in their homeowners insurance policy. This ensures that in the unlikely event of any unfortunate incidents, they will be fully covered.

The more secure the windmill is mounted to the ground, the more wind it can withstand.

Here is a link on how to form & pour your windmill in concrete:

The American Eagle windmills feature an innovative self-governing design, expertly crafted with 12 strategically pitched blades. These windmills are engineered to automatically adjust their orientation in response to wind speeds, utilizing the tail mechanism for optimal positioning at speeds of 27 mph or less. When wind speeds exceed this threshold, the windmill’s advanced design allows the blades to harness the wind’s force, enabling the structure to autonomously pivot away from intense gusts, thereby ensuring stability and longevity.

This remarkable functionality is demonstrated in the accompanying videos, showcasing the windmill’s resilience and efficiency in varying wind conditions.

What is the proper way to erect an American Eagle windmill?

Windmill model heights of 13ft and 18ft can be assembled from the ground with the assistance of 5-6 strong individuals, although this method is not advisable. For the taller models, specifically the 23ft, 28ft, and 33ft variants, it is highly recommended to utilize a bucket lift for safe and efficient erection. In fact: neglecting to follow these guidelines may result in the voiding of any warranty on parts that sustain damage during the assembly process.

Step # 1

Renting a bucket lift for the erection, it is the safest & easiest way.

Second: stand up the tower only, drive in the steel rods through the foot clamps at each corner, Level the tower & tighten all foot clamps. This would be the time to pour concrete, if you decide to do so.

Third: Let Concrete dry.

Fourth, there are 3 main pieces that make up the complete head. the compressor, the tail arm & fins & the windmill fan,

Once the windmill tower is level and secure. Use the bucket lift to install each piece (one at a time) in this order. First, the compressor, Second the tail arm & fins & finally the windmill fan/wheel.

Do I need to place 1 or 2 diffusers in my pond?

For round or oval ponds, we suggest placing a single diffuser closer to the center of the pond. This will ensure effective aeration and circulation throughout the entire pond. However, for longer kidney-shaped or rectangular ponds, we recommend using two diffusers. These should be positioned approximately one-third of the way in from each end. This placement will optimize the distribution of oxygen and maintain a healthy environment for aquatic life.

We’d recommend the (Standard) diffuser package during checkout

It is important to note: that diffusers should NEVER be placed at the deepest part of the pond. Instead, they should be positioned at half the depth of the pond. This prevents any disturbance to the water thermocline, especially during extreme temperatures in hot summers and cold winters. By following these placement guidelines, you can enhance the overall health and balance of your ponds ecosystem.

We’d recommend the (Deluxe) diffuser package during checkout

What’s the MAX pumping depth of an American Eagle Windmill?

The MAX pumping depth is 16ft total. We prioritize the crucial aspect of CFM air volume, which is why our windmills feature a bellow style compressor instead of a diaphragm compressor. By opting for bellow compressors, our windmills not only have a longer life expectancy compared to diaphragm windmills but also deliver an impressive air output of up to 3 & 1/2 times more CFM, per revolution. Experience superior pond aeration with our reliable and high-performing windmills.

Bellow Compressor

High Volume = Low Pressure

Diaphragm windmills can pump into 30ft even 40ft water depths, why can’t bellows?

( Diaphragm ) High Pressure = Low Volume

Bellow vs Diaphragm Compressors

The main purpose of pond aeration is to pump as much fresh oxygen into your pond as possible, after all, oxygen is one of the main elements of water & the more oxygen in the water the better the quality. In order to pump into water depths of 30ft even 40ft,

You need a lot of air pressure. The only way to get this pressure is by restricting the air volume (aka) less air.

Physics 101:

High Volume = Low Pressure

High Pressure = Low Volume

By advertising their windmills can pump in such water depths they’re basically admitting that their diaphragm windmills produce very little air volume. Which means, very little benefit to your overall ponds health.
